What We Are
What is MAP?
Minorities and Philosophy is an international nonprofit devoted to removing the barriers that keep members of marginalized groups out of academic philosophy. Its chapters are led by graduate students and open to anyone, whatever their background.
More than 180 chapters now operate at universities across five continents — and UIC has its own.
What We Do
Our vision
UIC MAP exists to build a community of budding philosophers. Anyone interested in thinking about philosophical questions outside the classroom is welcome at our meetings, and we especially encourage students from marginalized backgrounds to take part.
Our chapter is brand new, so the first few meetings will be given over to getting to know one another and deciding together what the chapter should do.
On the docket
- Screenings of philosophically interesting films.
- Discussions of articles and books circulated in advance.
- Talks by professional philosophers from backgrounds underrepresented in academia.
- Workshops and panels on pursuing further study and finding a place in academic philosophy.
